Do you often feel that you have to put a lot of time and effort into managing symptoms of depression or anxiety? Do you find that coping techniques that work sometimes, don’t work at others? Do you sometimes feel defeated by chronic and recurrent symptoms? Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT, pronounced as the word “act”) is a “big picture” therapy that asks you to consider a new relationship to your difficult thoughts and feelings. ACT recognizes that while many techniques and strategies can help us cope with depression and anxiety, ultimately nothing can “get rid of” emotional pain in life. The aim of ACT is to get you in touch with your deepest values and to help you to create a rich, full, and meaningful life while accepting the pain that inevitably goes with it. ACT methods, which include mindfulness practice, help you to be more fully present in your life, to open up to your experiences, to let go of struggle, and to do what matters. This group is appropriate for individuals who have previously worked with an ACT therapist and want to deepen their understanding and practice of ACT principles. It is also appropriate for those who are new to ACT and are curious about trying a new approach for moving forward in life. Learning from others’ experiences and reactions to exercises conducted in a group setting can be powerful, and group members can help motivate each other to make commitments and act on them.   Group sessions and homework between sessions will include mindfulness meditation and other mindfulness practices, experiential exercises, worksheets, and committing to actions consistent with what you value most.
