You may feel disconnected from your feelings, or you may feel overwhelmed by intense emotions. Both ways of experiencing emotions can cause major difficulties when facing life’s many challenges. You may end up trying to cope in ways that make life worse in the long run, like using substances, lashing out at others, self-injuring, or overeating. DBT was developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., to help give people skills to manage their emotions and their lives more effectively. In our DBT group, you will learn many skills in the four categories of mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. These skills help you to identify and manage your emotions, participate fully in the present moment, tolerate difficult situations, and improve interactions with your friends, family, and colleagues.
